6 Ways We Can Make Our Wardrobes Last Longer & Announcement!
The magic doesn't stop after wearing your new purchase for the first time. At MTL, we design all our clothing with longevity in mind, meaning they can remain in your wardrobe for years to come. But we also need your helping hand to make sure that happens . Much like looking after a house plant (although actually that can prove to be a tricky task at times) - or - much like remembering to water your house plants
Here are our top tips for ensuring your wardrobe lasts longer:
💫 Wash less frequently. Not all clothes need to be chucked in the wash after one wear. Air out clothes or wash out sneaky stains by hand. Unless there's some major wine spillage on a Friday night - that will need some attention asap
💫 Keep it cool and wash at a low temperature. Keep that carbon cowboy boot print down and save some dollar!
💫 Wash our garments made from recycled polyester in GuppyFriend wash bags to prevent micro plastic from entering water supplies. Micro-plastics are annoying af when they enter our water supply. Easy to use, the washbags reduce fibre shedding and protect your clothes in the wash. They also filter the few fibres that do break which collect in the corner of the wash bag and can be easily removed and disposed of. We’re stoked to announce we will be stocking GuppyFriend on our site v soon!
💫 The tumble dryer is your wardrobe's frenemy! While it can be helpful for drying stuff in a hurry, tumble dryers use a hell of a lot of energy and also destroy certain fabrics. Hang out your garms to air dry immediately after washing to retain their silky goodness
💫 Learn how to alter and repair - if you don't know your way around a sewing kit, Youtube is your bestie in this scenario! We recommend checking out Fashion Revolution’s channel for some great tutorials
💫 As much as we're all guilty of creating a 'floordrobe' after a morning of not knowing what to wear or before a night out, make sure you hang your sweet garms back up as soon as you can to avoid creasing or damage!
However, should you think the garment has gone past its peak, we completely understand! Our goal for 2021 is to become more than just slow fashion and work towards being circular fashion.
‘Circular fashion’ can be defined as clothes, shoes or accessories that are designed, sourced, produced and provided with the intention to be used and circulate responsibly and effectively in society for as long as possible in their most valuable form, and hereafter return safely to the biosphere when no longer of human use. (Anna Brismar, Green Strategy, 2017)
Last year we already made our first step towards circularity by offering our garments on rental platform By Rotation - the UK’s first and largest peer to peer fashion rental app. Sharing and rotating our wardrobes is an important path forward. High quality fashion shouldn’t be exclusive nor should it cost the earth. The app also allows you to calculate the carbon emissions you’ve saved by renting an item, which we think is pretty damn cool.
And on to our exciting announcement!
We are now in the process of launching our own Take Back scheme this summer. You’ll have the option to send back your unwanted used MTL garments to us (no hard feelings we promise!) in exchange for a discount voucher towards a future MTL purchase. We’ll up-cycle (and mend if needed) the returned garments and resell them as an Archive Collection! We’re also in the process of forming a partnership with Oxfam so garments that are beyond a reselling state will be donated to the OXFAM recycling scheme.
